Traditions and Festivals
A number of religious feasts, testifying the genuineness of Milazzo life-style, are celebrated during the year. Links with the tradition are still strong and although the town has profoundly changed its original rural dimension, religious feasts are still celebrated.

The Holy Easter is the first of a series of religious celebrations and it is also the occasion for celebrating the arrival of spring. Holy representations are organised in the old town centre - the Borgo Antico - where the Court of the Inquisition was located during the Spanish invasion.

San Giuseppe is celebrated on March 19th and this feast is organised during the Lent period (the forty days between Ash Wednesday and Easter Sunday). The first Sunday after Easter the saint is celebrated and its statue is brought through town streets where people scatters scented flower petals.

At the beginning of May San Francesco da Paola is celebrated; he is one of the patron saints of the town and patron of the fishermen supplying the traditional fish market held in the old town centre every day. According to the tradition the saint sailed through the straight of Messina on his mantle. To celebrate this event the procession is held on boats in the sea and people throw garlands in the sea while the local band plays music. At the end of the procession, once the statue of the saint is brought back to the church, a performance of fireworks is held.

In June, in the night between the 12th and the 13th people go to the small church of Sant'Antonio - built in the rocks - to listen to the Mass. On June 13th, the statue of the Saint is brought through the town with a bustle of people, lights, flowers, music and fireworks.Â

At the end of August the other patron saint of Milazzo, Santo Stefano, is celebrated. The Cathedral of the town is dedicated to Saint Stephen and even if the correct date for this celebration is December 26th the town prefers to celebrate this saint in Summer. People are usually on holiday during that period and there is a nice atmosphere. All the activities of this celebration, from the procession to the fireworks are therefore followed by a large crowd.

These are only a few examples of the various religious celebrations of the town. It is possible for you to take part in one of these ancient celebrations organised by the town's church communities during your stay in Milazzo.
